China

Princesses’ infatuation with China began a few months ago when she asked me what the tiny label on one of her toys said.

“Made in China” I replied.

Ever since then, the people of China have been blessed in prayers, asked about after the earthquake (“I hope all the people in China are okay”) and are generally revered in our home. I think Princess envisions China as some dreamy mix between Santa’s workshop and the Emerald City.

I’m afraid watching the Olympic opening ceremonies only solidified the child’s dream of this fantastical utopia called China — the place where all the world’s toys are made. Someday I’ll break the news to her about government censorship, factory child labor and deadly lead paint.
