Making Stuff: Upcycled Cashmere Baby Blanket

by This is Carrie on November 17, 2010

After the crocheted bottle cozy post, I had a few questions about the blanket in the background. Here are the details:

Back in 2007 I spotted these upcycled cashmere baby blankets and I sent the idea to the “I’d like to make something like that” file in my head.

While pregnant with Baby Brother in 2008, I gathered four cashmere sweaters at the local Goodwill and got to work on my own pieced sweater baby blanket.  It’s backed in a green cotton gauze, has some hand stitched details and it’s the softest and snuggliest of blankets.  Baby Brother ended up adopting a different blanket for his “blankie” so I am hoping the new baby will fall in love with this one.

I absolutely love that blanket!

Mia November 18, 2010 at 8:29 am

I love this too! I marked your last post for the next time I need a baby blanket, so thanks for posting this! Also, thanks for saying you got the sweaters from Goodwill…everytime I see something like this it usually calls for ‘old sweaters you have lying around’ and I never have the items lying around, so it is not really upcycling for me after all. Also wondering.. have you washed it yet? How did that work out? I am all about baby bedding these days, and trying to come up with new things to add to my etsy shop, so I have had baby blankets on the brain for the last few days. Wonder if you could use the same concept in a mock quilt type of thing…

I washed all the sweaters before cutting them up to see what would happen to them. I washed and dryed them exactly like I wanted to be able to wash the final blanket. They all came out fantastic and super soft. The blanket itself has been washed a few times too and has help up great. Good luck with your new products!

Wow, I am determined to make one of these for my baby-on-the-way.
Total novice when it comes to the Singer though, so I have a couple questions. Do you just take scissors directly to the sweaters (cashmere doesn’t unravel or anything?)? What other types of material would be suitable as backing?

Thanks so much… now off to the thrift store circuit!

ok, I have been collecting ruined cashmere sweaters (that my husband washes with towels, soccer shorts, bras and jeans) for years, now I will make the blanket, but mine will be rectangles and squares. Thank you for the inspiration, love your site.

This would make a great couch throw for winter mornings. Thanks for sharing!

Rachel September 21, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Hey, I would love to make this but I have a question. Do you just cut the sweater and not worry about it unraveling or coming apart? Thanks!!

I cut the sweater strips, sewed them together and then serged the raw edges together to keep them from unraveling too much. Depending on how tight the knit is, you might not have to even do that. Looser knits will unravel easier.

ohh so adorable!! going to have to make something like this!

Jean October 1, 2011 at 7:26 pm

I was wondering the finished size of the blanket. I have 9 adult cashmere/wool sweaters I felted. They now look like they are size 3T. Not sure on the size/width of the blocks in the photo. If I do not have a serger, will a zigzag stitch be ok to finish the seams of the blocks?

Thanks so much! I have 4 baby showers ahead. 🙂 Lots of wonderful ideas here.

I didn’t felt my sweaters so it’s hard to say if that will be enough for your blanket. I made my blanket 36″ square and I think I used 4 different sweaters. Hope that helps!

Jean October 4, 2011 at 5:09 am

Thanks so much! I assumed I needed to felt them, lol. I didn’t think the cashmere would shrink so much. The wool ones shrunk a bit less. I will collect more sweaters, and I have time to do that. Super thanks for posting!

Tara Marie October 28, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I was wondering if there is a tutorial for this? I kept looking for a link but didn’t find one.

Sarah December 13, 2011 at 6:49 am

LOVE this! Thanks for the idea! I think I’m going to make one for both my boys for Christmas!

Did you use any sort of batting or liner? Or is it just the sweater layer and gauze layer? And are those two layers sewn together anywhere other than the outer edges?

THANKS!

Hi, what a neat blog you have here. I, too, believe that we should reuse what we can and so I had a number of cashmere sweaters which i cut up and then took the biggest squares I could. I made them into a rectangle, sewed cut up sweatshirts around that and then appliqued the whole thing to a fleece blanket I picked up at a garage sale. I have a great warm, bright, “wooly bully” blanket that I just love. It hangs over the edges of a twin bed and so is perfect for the couch or the floor. My Maine coon cat preferentially sleeps atop it. I think that’s good karma.

Thanks for your blog, I have subscribed. I hope you are still posting, I see this is two years old.

Stumbled upon your posting from Pinterest. I have gotta try this. You said you used gauze, I may try with flannel. The wheels on turning on this one.

much the same layout and design. Great choice of colors!

Brenda Lee Reed December 30, 2013 at 10:56 pm

Moths got into my sweaters, so I washed them in hot water to make them shrink and kill any moth eggs. They are ruined anyway once the moths have found them. I’ve bene wondering what to do with the shrunken sweaters and as soon as I can persuade my cat to get off them, I’ll make one of your blankets. I find that sweaters that have been washed in hot water are much thicker, but do not ravel. The idea of the light gauze for a backing is genius — it would not be even as heavy as cotton and more flexible.

I hope you get a chance to look at my blog. I found your blanket on Pinterest, and as a Pinterester, I decided to write a blog about some images that have special meaning for me. I’m going to bookmark your blog — I bet you have a pile of good ideas. — Brenda
