Making Stuff: Christmas Stockings

by This is Carrie on December 9, 2010

I finally finished Brother’s stocking, just in time for his THIRD Christmas. I can hardly believe it.  It’s been a work in progress since he was born.

(don’t worry, I actually embroidered their real names  on the stockings)

The stockings didn’t require much creativity since they are pre-printed felt kits by Bucilla.  But, when I picked up my first stocking kit eight years ago for Princess, I don’t think I realized the time commitment I was making.  I’m so not good at projects that take extreme amounts of patience.

But, I have three down and one to go. Better start now so I can finish it by the time The Baby turns 3.

Beautiful! And glad to know I’m not the only nut out there intent on making the Bucilla stockings… My mother made one for me for my first Christmas and so when I got married and found out my hubby didn’t have a stocking I bought a kit for him and one for each of our dogs. A year later (and zero complete stockings later) I was pregnant with our first child and immediately bought one for him. I managed to finish my son’s just in time for his second Christmas (he’s a late Nov. birthday so the first Christmas did not happen!) and am now, 4 years after purchasing it, hoping to get my hubby’s done in time for Christmas this year. The dogs will have to wait! They take soooo much time (but are worth it cause they’re adorable!)

I’ve made a few stockings and really want new ones, but don’t have the energy to start more this year. I really like all the intricate details in yours.

My husband’s family all have knitted stockings with a Santa face on them. His Grandma has been knitting these for all the family members for decades. Well, she can’t knit anymore and a few years ago she passed the torch onto my husband. He’s frantically knitting to finish our son’s stocking in time for this Christmas (Xander’s 2nd) but there are 4 other new family members (2 by marriage, 2 births) in the extended family who won’t have their stockings this year– hopefully he’ll have them finished by Christmas 2011! He’s really hoping one of his siblings or cousins takes up knitting so that he’s not the only one to make them.

Your stockings are beautiful!

Wow! That is quite an undertaking for your husband! I think it’s so wonderful that he’s working his hardest to carry on his Grandmother’s tradition.

My MIL makes these types of stockings for every family member; she has 6 kids, 4 daughter-in-laws, 8 grandkids and counting. I don’t know how she does it – AMAZING. They look great all together on her mantel.

I made these felt stockings for each of my children when they had their first Christmas. Now that I have a granddaughter, my son loved the idea I would make one for his newborn daughter. I also have a kit for my daughter-in-law, but that will have to be for her birthday. I didn’t get it done for Christmas this year!

Great post about Bucilla stockings. We’ve been selling them for years and have never seen the stocking on the left with the name “Princess”. What is the title of that kit? It’s very cute! Thanks for letting me know in advance.
