A 5K on the Fourth

by This is Carrie on July 5, 2011

This is the third year I’ve run the Fourth of July (almost) 5K sponsored by my church.  Two years ago, I was just getting into running and was thrilled with my 2nd place division finish in 24:30.  Last year, I ran the race pregnant which is why it was so fun seeing my friend, Elise running it pregnant this year (you must read this post about how this amazing triathlete told her husband she was pregnant).  This year we had quite a large group rockin’ Sparkle Athletic running skirts. Four of us ended up on the podium!

This year, I decided to race in my Vibrams for the first time (I’ve only trained in them up to now).  Guess what? No one notices your shoes when you’re wearing a sparkly running skirt.

I came in 3rd in my age division and 4th woman overall with a 20:42 finish time (2.9 miles with a 7:05 pace).  I’m crediting my success to my Sparkle Athletic Running skirt and boot camp.

Yeah! I think I’m going to make running a 5k on the 4th an annual event for myself. It’s a lot of fun. Your pace is amazing! I ran yesterday and broke a PR and couldn’t have been more happy. I, too, run in a skirt, much longer but I run in one!

Congrats! I used to love running and have been thinking of getting back into it.
I cringe though to see that baby in the Bjorn. I hope she didn’t run with him/her like that. Facing in in a mei tai, or SSC, or on her back, would be a much better option (though having done miles of walking with my babe in a mei tai, I can’t imagine running while babywearing!). THere are so many better options than Bjorns 🙂

No need to worry. This photo was taken a good 1/2 hour after the race. Her husband was watching all three of her kids during the race.

Not being a fan of running, I actually had a great time running. I think it was because I surpassed my goal… of not walking. Albeit slow, I ran the whole thing.
Dang! I need to get some self tanner on these legs!

One of these days I’m going to be in shape enough to run a 5K. My husband and I started walking yesterday 4 miles each day at 16 min mile pace. Not great, but 2 pregnancies and 3 kids haven’t helped my time to run/walk. There’s actually a 5K in my town Sunday that I am tempted to walk/run, but I don’t know if I’m ready!

I know Linda Scollick (Manion) from high school. Wonderful girl! I bet she’s a hoot now a days! 😉
