Karaoking Takes Practice

by This is Carrie on April 26, 2009

People make fun of me when I speak of “Karaoke practice”, but Karaoke parties are so much more fun when you have done a little research, downloaded some prospective songs and made a “Karaoke” playlist on your Ipod. You must also remember good karaoking is not about voice quality, it’s about passion and commitment.

I promise.

My Karaoke Playlist
Living on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Heartbreaker – Pat Benetar
Wind of Change – Scorpions
Baby one more Time – Britney Spears
Holding out for a Hero – Bonnie Tyler
I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight – Cutting Crew
More than Words – Extreme
I think We’re Alone Now – Tiffany
Eternal Flame – Bangles
More than Words – Extreme
Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
Black Velvet – Alannah Myles
Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
Dancing Queen – ABBA
Toy Soldier – Martika

Killer Duets for the Experienced Karaoke Singers

Tell Him – Barbra Streisand & Celine Dion
No More Tears – Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer

Karaoke Baby Shower Songs (I’ve been to 3–really!):
All That She Wants (Is another Baby)-Ace of Base
Sweet Child of Mine – Guns and Roses
Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys – Willie Nelson
Baby Love – The Supremes
The Power of Love – Huey Lewis
Push it Real Good – Salt N Peppa

Oh wow! That’s dedication! I don’t have the voice or the passion, I let Skyler do all the singing, but he sure can sing. He also loves being the center of attention.

Love your taste!

Girl, I firmly believe in investing in some practice before hitting the stage with karaoke. Some of my tried and true are, as you know, Total Eclipse of the Heart (which you will always rock more than me), Black Velvet (my new crowd pleaser), Rehab by Amy Winehouse (for obvious reasons…), and for duets, Summer Lovin from Grease with my hubby…

You forgot to list “Push it real good” by Salt and peppa… That was seriously so fun last night!

Chloe, I am also a fan of your Tell Him, Son of a Preacher Man and Midnight train to Georgia.

AMEN to that TIC. I tried to practice this last go-round…but I never know the verses of anything. I’m hopeless.

I would like for you and Todd to master “Islands in the Stream” a la Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. It might even make me come to a firm event. (probably not)

I've been lavishing myself in your blog for the last week, so I know this comment is many months late, but…

I can't tell you how often I feel your spirit whenever I karaoke. There are days when I'm not feelin' it, so who do I channel? Not MJ, not Aretha, you. Kudos.
