One of my favorite baby shower gifts to make and give.
Gather materials: Newborn wrap shirt, Skirt fabric (about 1 yd), 3/8 ribbon/twill tape, 1″ ribbon or lace.
Step 1 – Cut off bottom half of wrap shirt 3/4″ below snaps.
Use long sleeve or short, dyed or undyed.
Step 2 – Cut 2 skirt pieces 30″W x 20″L. I like a long, full skirt. Adjust measurements to your liking.
Skirt width should be at least twice the width of opened wrap shirt.
Step 3 – Sew skirt pieces together along one 20″ side.
Step 4 – Hem each 20″ long edge of skirt.
I use a 1/4″ roll hem.
Step 5 – Sew skirt hem. I like to do a wide, 2″ hem.
Step 6 – Run two gathering stitches along top of skirt. One at 3/4″ from edge and one at 1/2″ from edge.
Step 7 – Gather skirt evenly to a length that equals the length of open wrap shirt + 2″
Step 8 – Pin open wrap shirt to gathered skirt–right sides together.
Step – 9 While slightly stretching the shirt to match the skirt, sew together with a 5/8″ seam allowance.
Step 10 – To keep waist seam from fraying, finish with a serger or a zig zag stitch.
Step 11 – Tack a 7″ piece of ribbon or twill tape to inside corner of wrap shirt and a matching tie to the inside of shirt at side seam.
Step 12 – Stitch a piece of 1″ ribbon or lace to outside corner of wrap shirt, leaving enough length to wrap around dress and tie a bow in the front.
You’re done!
Short sleeved version with crochet trim at neck.

I love the tutorial, thanks!
I'm SO excited too!!!
Thanks…you've inspired me to clean up my sewing room so that I can get up there and make some goodies!
is there a way to strenghten the onesie/shirt that is used?
I've made a tshirt dress that's pretty similar in technique, but because my baby is at the part crawling, part walking stage, she tends to pull the skirt pretty bad when crawling and that rips the shirt where the shirt sewed to the skirt….
