Crochet Baby Turban Pattern & Tutorial
This quick and easy crocheted hat makes a great handmade baby shower gift.
The hardest part might be choosing the color.
A faux rib pattern gives the little turban added interest.
Have fun! I dare you to make just one.

Crochet Baby Turban Pattern – size 0-3 months
Supplies:
Martha Stewart Extra Soft Wool Blend or similar worsted-weight baby yarn (you can get two hats from one skein).
US G6/4.00mm crochet hook
Yarn Needle
Stitches: ch- chain, dc-double crochet, hdc-half double crochet, sl st- slip stitch
The first 5 rounds are crocheted in the round and joined with a slip stitch in the starting chain. What you might consider the “wrong side” of the top of the hat becomes the “right side” once the rib stitch begins at row 6. From round 6 on, at the end of each round, join with a slip stitch before turning to begin the next round (this means you will alternate working from the front and the back of the hat).
Repeat pattern inside the asterisks. Total stitch count for each round is in parentheses. Chain does not count toward final stitch count.
Gauge: Rounds 1-4 = 2 3/4″ height
Start with a Magic ring (http://www.crochetme. com/forums/t/28917.aspx)
- Row 1- ch 3, dc 11 inside magic ring; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch.
- Row 2- ch 3, *2 dc in each dc* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. (22 dc)
- Row 3- ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in next dc* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. (33 dc)
- Row 4- ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. (44 dc)
- Row 5- ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch (55 dc)
- Row 6- ch 3, dc in every stitch around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Turn. (55 dc)
- Row 7- ch 2, hdc in every dc around in back loop only; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Turn. (55 hdc)
- Row 8- ch 3, dc in each hdc front loop only; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Turn. (55 dc)
- Repeat rows 7 and 8 three more times (creating 4 “ribs” of stitches). You will complete 14 rounds in all.
Finish off. Weave in ends.
Thread yarn through yarn needle. Using a double thickness, wrap yarn from top of first rib to the edge of the hat and pull tight. Wind it about 7 times to make the turban “knot”. Secure yarn and hide end under the knot.

I have made dozens of these and given them to the hospitals for newborns.

I loved how easy this pattern was, but this hat is way to big for a baby let alone a newborn, it doesn’t even fit my eight year old.

Check your gauge. Are you using the same weight of wool and crochet hook. You may need to go down a size of crochet hook.
Mine was perfect! Fits a 3 month.

Yes, I agree. I have made several attempts with 4 different sizes of hooks. (I’m using worsted weight yarn.) Once I found the hook that gave me the correct gauge, the hat seemed WAY too big for a newborn. As I don’t know any newborns, I have been doing research to see what the circumference of a newborn hat should be in hopes that will help. Any suggestions are welcomed & appreciated.

I found the same problem so I adjusted the pattern
I left out rows 4&5 (this stops the increasing of size)
Mine turned out a more suitable size for a baby 😊

Can you please advise me how to modify the size of this adorable turban for 2-3 lb and 4-5 lb preemies? I am a member of a group that crochets/knits/sews items for NICUs across the USA. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for this pattern! I’ve struggled to find a decent baby beanie and this one is it…turban or plain. Also the model in your picture is just adorable!

Can you add the instructions for the magic ring? The link is not valid. How many chains in the loop do you suggest to form the ring?

Thank you so much for this pattern. Love it! Just made a turban for my brand new granddaughter, born last Friday and it works up quickly. I used a smaller hook, F, because she’s on the smaller side and now I can’t wait to make more. Will be sending some along to the hospital where she was born for babies there.

hi
i have a question about the gauge. you state: Gauge: Rounds 1-4 = 2 3/4″ height, is it the circle measurement after 4 rounds or do you measure from the center?

How would I adjust the stiches on this pattern for bigger sizes? IE: 3-6 month 6-8 month
Thank you!

Row 8 front loop, are you referring to the “3rd loop of the hdc”?
Such a cute turban!
Thanks,
