Garage Sale for a Good Cause

by This is Carrie on June 4, 2010

This is the final month of Princess’s 7 month plan to raise money to buy arts & crafts kits for kids at Loma Linda Hospital receiving treatment for cancer. It’s a plan she hatched last November when her 3 year old cousin was diagnosed with leukemia. While not all of her ideas actually panned out (the neighborhood spelling bee with an entrance fee of $5 didn’t go over so well) this last idea, a garage sale, was her best one yet.

I started collecting our extra stuff a month before, but we soon realized we didn’t have enough stuff to have a proper sale. So Princess put out a call for donations at church, at school and around the neighborhood.

In no time at all, our garage was filled with stuff to sell.  It was so sweet to see Princess come home from school with little bags full of donated items from kids in her class (along with a couple of cans here and there to recycle).

In four hours, she made $267.  Add that to the $190 she had collected from recycling cans & bottles, selling origami cranes and kind web donations since November, and she has over $450 to spend on arts & craft supplies for the kids at Loma Linda Hospital.

A big shout out to everyone who supported her in her fund raising efforts.

That is so awesome! She is so motivated and I’m sure she’ll inspire other kids her age to do something kind like that. You’ve got a special little girl there…you must’ve done something right mama:-)

What an accomplishment and what a sweetheart she is! I am a huge fan of Loma Linda Hospital…my two daughters were born there, and our oldest is a healthy example of the benefits of their amazing NICU and specialty clinics. My little sister had a heart transplant there when she was only 2 weeks old; she’s a university-attending, physically active 20 year old now.

Congratulations on her fundraising success!

That is so sweet of your daughter! My daughter was recently being treated in a different hospital for cancer. The crafts and toys really took her mind off of treatment. So tell your little one thank you for her thoughtfulness it means a lot to the children. 🙂

How awesome! What a beautiful and caring daughter you are raising. I too am a big fan of Loma Linda & staff. Just by chance I ended up there while on vacation and spent the next 2 months there until my son was born and then another month with him. I cannot say enough good things about it. Prayers for your daughter and her cousin.
