Girls with Glasses – I Need Your Help

by This is Carrie on September 19, 2010

It became quickly apparent at last week’s eye exam that Pumpkin needed eyeglasses.  She remained composed as we started looking at frames in the office.  After trying on the fifth pair she “didn’t like”, she turned to the woman helping us and asked “Will I have to wear them to school too?”.  The woman responded with a nod of her head. That’s when Pumpkin turned to me with tears in her eyes, hoping i might tell her differently.  All I could do was choke out an “it’ll be okay” as I tried to hold in my own tears.  I know what it feels like to be the “girl with glasses” because I had glasses in kindergarten too.

Since that day she’s come back to being the composed and confident little girl we all know–a little girl who’s even showed some excitement about getting her glasses on Tuesday, though I know the fear of being “the girl with glasses” is still right below the surface. I know she’s worried the other kids might not like her because she has to wear glasses. I know because she told me.  I know because I’ve felt the same way.

So, to help ease her fears, we’ve been noticing every “girl with glasses” and talking about how cool and smart and fun and special they are.  I think she’s especially liked a couple of The Girls with Glasses Shows I’ve found for her.

Here’s where I need your help.

If you are a “girl with glasses”, I’d love it if you could send a picture of yourself rockin’ your glasses.  I would love to have a tons of photos to show her, to help kick off her inaugural week of glasses wearing with courage and confidence. You can:

1. E-mail it to me at carrie(at)thismamamakesstuff(dot)com

2.Post the photo on your blog & link to it in the comments

3. Tweet the photo to @thisiscarrie

4. Spread the word to all your friends that I need pictures of “girls with glasses” this week!

5. If you are on Twitter or Facebook maybe you’d be kind enough to share something like this: “Are you a Girl with Glasses? A 5yo girl needs your photo –>http://bit.ly/9NqYq7 #glassespride”

At the very least, I hope when she walks into kindergarten this week as the only “girl with glasses” in the class, she’ll know she’s really not alone.

I’ll start:

Your daughter is beautiful, and glasses can only add to her charm and quirkiness. I have two little girls, who are now seven and five. My older daughter got her first pair of glasses in kindergarten. Over the summer, we discovered during kindergarten testing that our younger child needed glasses as well.

I didn’t realize there was a stigma attached to it anymore. I remember feeling a little out of place with mine when I got them in the fifth grade, but I don’t recall being teased about it. If anything, my classmates actually began to take my comments more seriously. My IQ didn’t automatically increase when I got glasses, but from the reaction of people around me you would have thought it had.

Both of my daughters were excited to pick out glasses. They make some very colorful and fun frames these days. I think glasses are much cuter and more of an accessory nowadays than when I got my first pair.

Neither of my girls have every felt any embarrassment about wearing glasses. Both are happy to be able to see clearly, and they love having one more accessory that they can personalize by choosing a color they love. It also helps that Mom, Dad, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles all wear glasses too!

Here are my daughters…

I’ve been wearing glasses since High School.
My 5yo daughter gets her eyes checked every year before the start of school and asks to own glasses every time. (Time will come, just not yet)

Glasses aren’t a bad thing! It is another way that you are unique and yourself!

All the cool girls wear glasses! And we dance with them, too! I didn’t get mine until I was 23, and I was so excited…direct quote, from me, in the optometrist’s office: “They’re like jewelry for your face!”

I only recently came to terms with being a girl with glasses.

I used to try to find the thinnest framed, least conspicuous glasses possible. That was the wrong strategy for me. A wonderful fellow at an optometrist’s shop convinced me to try on a pair of deep red, thick framed glasses. At that moment, I fell in love with wearing glasses again.

I’ve been wearing glasses since I was six years old, although I was kind of excited because everyone else in my family wore glasses and I felt like the odd one out. 🙂

I don’t have any pictures, but I’ve worn glasses for 53 years, since I was 4 years old, and I was the only kid in kindergarten that had them. My mom has worn them since she was 2, so she was really little. Back then, there wasn’t much choice in frames, but there are so many cool ones now, it’s hard to choose. I tried on 12 pairs this spring before choosing my favorite, and they rock! I know someone who really uses them as a fashion accessory, with plain clear glass. She has several pairs that she wears just to match her outfits.

Please tell Pumpkin for this grandma of a 5-yr-old that what is not attractive is the squinting you do when you can’t see properly. It’s no fun not to be able to see the board, and it’s no fun to have headaches. It’ll be OK, I promise.

I had to start wearing glasses in the first grade. I thought I was the coolest most beautiful girl ever! I totally rocked those purple 80’s glasses. Today I’m a little more conservative in my frames choice but I feel smart anytime I wear them. So pick a pair you love and wear them with confidence!

I blogged about it on my blog…

My daughter, Inez, had to get glasses last year when she entered Kindergarten too. She was actually excited to get them (which surprised me). Here are a few links from our blog.

She got glasses in March, just before her third birthday. She has bi-lateral amblyopia and is significantly far-sighted.

Eleanor loved choosing her glasses and was upset when she found out we wouldn’t be taking them home with us on that day. When we did pick them up she put them on and didn’t take them off until bedtime. She loves her glasses.

When I was a girl, I used to *wish* I had to wear glasses! Now that I’m older, I do have to wear them sometimes, but other times I put them on just to have a little fun 🙂
