Her First 5K

by This is Carrie on October 25, 2010

Princess has been talking about doing the Chapman University 5K since the spring.  Even though she knew I’d be just 3 weeks away from delivering a baby, she was sure I’d be able to run it with her, both of us decked out in our Team Sparkle outfits.  But, about a month ago, it became quite apparent that running more than 1/2 mile was going to be impossible.  We were both pretty disappointed.

I did the beginning training runs with her and was able to run the first 1/2 mile and the last 1/2 mile with her during the race.  Running even that short distance together and seeing that smile never leave her face, will be one of my most treasured memories.

During the last month before the race, Todd stepped in and helped her train up to the 3 mile mark.  He also jumped in and ran the middle 2 miles with her in the race.  Sometimes getting Princess to open up and talk is a challenging thing for dad, but as it turns out, she got quite chatty during their evening training runs.  I know those moments are surely going to be treasured by Todd and hopefully it’s a training tradition that will carry for many years.

We were so proud of her and more importantly, she was pretty proud of herself.

Final Time: 32:12 (pace 10:23)

YAY! Congrats to your wee lady on completing this race.. what an accomplishment and to you for running a mile while so far along in your pregnancy…

Congrats to all involved. Just the thought running even a 1/4 of a mile not pregnant is enough to put fear in me.

Holy Moly she ran fast! Todd looks skinny!
WAY TO GO PRINCESS!!!
One day she will be running with you or todd and leave you in the dust…and you’ll be super proud then too!

That is awesome. I can’t wait until my daughter is old enough to run with me. She is 3 and we run down the block once in a while… it is great. Congrats, Princess… you are one fast sista!

Congrats to your little running princess – and you are incredible. I wouldn’t even considered the idea of running 1/2 a yard when I was that pregnant! Way to go!!

I love that Todd and Princess training together brought them closer. My dad and I had our best talks on the basketball court.

Congrats to Princess! That is an impressive time for an 8 year old!

I got misty eyed reading that 🙂 Congratulations on her first 5K!! I think it was around mile 2.5 that she and Todd passed me, yelling “Go Team Sparkle!!!!” since I was wearing my pink sparkle skirt. She was rockin that 5K! Way to go!

Wowsa. That’s awesome, so proud of Princess and of you too Carrie, for running the first and the last bits. I love the last picture, it’s a keeper.

I cannot believe your baby is due in a few weeks–that is so exciting! Please let us know all about him when he arrives. Maggie is dying to do a little race herself and plans to do the Jr. Tri during a race I am doing this spring. What cute girls!
