My “nutrition” during the last race consisted of Sport Beans and a Larabar. Both of which I love but had to choke down. They were unexpectedly hard to eat while physically exerting myself.
So, I have been testing out the Gu. The consistency makes me want to gag.
So I guess I get to choose from gagging or choking.

I can’t breathe through my nose during races, so when I try to eat anything, I run out of breath. GU is my choice, either Chocolate or Vanilla.
It’s funny that you should post this now – Sam just came home with a bag from REI full of Gu to test out…you guys should chat – he also hates gagging down Gu so he bought different flavors of the Gu Chews, which are like cubes of fruit chews. I tested one out and liked it – bit of an aftertaste but nothing water can’t help…
My wife can’t do gels either, totally because of the texture, so she too eats Sports Beans. She only runs, however. Eating anything on a bike is a challenge, especially in the aero position. Makes you realize how much of a role gravity actually plays in getting food down.
Yeah, eating anything on a bike seems pretty dangerous. for my marathon i just kept a bunch of normal jelly beans in my pocket and would pop one in my mouth every 2 miles or so and just suck on it. It worked for me. I also did powerbar gels – orange flavor maybe? – I didn’t think they were that bad.
This stuff saved me during my marathon. And GU tastes better then the other brands. Although I think the energy beans are the best.
Oh. good. gravy. Gu not only is disgusting on the way down, but er, the gas on the way out is AWFUL. My husband uses it– he’s a distance cyclist– and it makes me want to vomit, which I actually did last time I ran a race alongside a girlfriend who had never tried GU and ingested too much of the stuff and proceeded to ralph all. over. as we ran, and the sight of puke…well, that made me puke…and….shudder– gu= ew! 🙂 Those energy blocks– shock blocks I think they are called– are a lot higher on my list:)
