Making Stuff: A Holiday Outfit

by This is Carrie on December 13, 2010

I pictured the entire ivory outfit with detachable fur collar in my head before I even looked through my fabric stash.  Then, I found the lace and the piece of (real-I have no idea where it came from-PETA don’t kill me) fur in my “fancy fabric bin” and knew it was meant to be.  Even though my time for sewing has been greatly reduced with new addition to our family, I knew if I could I finish the outfit in time for Princess’s trip to see the Nutcracker with her BFF once I found the perfect ivory sweater to start off with at Target.

With the first fitting, Princess was in love…almost.  She felt the skirt needed to be “pouffier”.  I wasn’t thrilled with the added work, but I am glad she still enjoys a pretty, poufy skirt.

A ruffle of gathered netting added to the lining and the skirt was perfect and finished just in time for it’s Nutcracker debut.

Ummmm…. can you be my mom? That outfit rules and my 31 year old self is completely jealous. Adoption? I could help out with the new baby. Just wanted to throw that out there.

This creation makes me so incredibly happy to be the mom to a girl. And I have a few years to practice on my beat up old Singer before her first nutcracker cotillion.
Thanks for bringing a smile to my sleepless night!

Wow, this is gorgeous! She looks like a girl from the 50s. I love the poofy skirt. Is that lace fabric refashioned? I also love your crocheted doily jewelry, ornaments, etc. I’m going to show my sister in law. Oh, and the felted hats. I would be so proud if I crocheted a hat like that, but felting it gives it even more character!

The lace was from my stash. I think it was some I had leftover from a freelance job I did years ago.
