Making Stuff: Pom Pom Monsters

by This is Carrie on November 25, 2011

Growing up, I loved making pom pom critters.  But compared to the one’s my kids made with Klutz’s new, all-inclusive craft book, Pom Pom Monster Salon, mine were totally boring.  While my creations were limited to pre-made pom poms, my kids learned how to make their own pom poms (using an ingenious little pom-pom making tool) with customized hair cuts and accessories.

While the suggested age for The Pom Pom Monster project book  is 8+, all the kids (ages 3-9) loved it.  My nine-year old didn’t need any help completing her monster, my 6 year old was able to do almost all of the steps herself and my 3 year old loved making all the color and accessory choices for his little mohawked creation.

I loved seeing the kids use the Pom Pom Monster Salon as a jumping off point for even more creative play as they built a house for their creations which included cardboard books, felt beds and an origami piano.  They even pulled out our own yarn stash to make more monsters after the included supply ran out, turning a long day off school into a full day of making and playing.

Final Review:  6 thumbs up from the kids and 2 thumbs up from Mom for Pom Pom Monster Salon. We’ve already picked up a couple more copies for kids on our Christmas list.  You do need to provide your own scissors and I would suggest picking up some better glue for the accessories.

Disclosure:  I was given a copy of Pom Pom Monster Salon free of charge by Klutz for review purposes. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by anyone.
