Hippie Headband Tutorial {T-shirt Refashion}
This quick and easy craft is a big hit with the kids.
All you need are 1″ strips of fabric cut from an old t-shirt (or 2 or 3) and some pony beads. We had a ton left over from our Beaded T-shirt Bracelet project.
Pick out three long strips of knit, t-shirt fabric. Stretch to turn them into “noodles”.
Tie the three strips together with a loose knot about 8″ from the tips. Use tape to stabilize while you braid a strip long enough to fit snugly around head (about 16″).
While holding both ends securely, undo the knot at the top of the braid and tie a new, square knot securing the beginning and end of the braid.
Trim tails to desired length then string on pony beads. Cutting the ends at a diagonal make it easier.
Tie a knot in the end after you’ve strung the beads so they don’t fall off.
After you’ve added the beads, slip on your new headband and get ready to flash a peace sign!

Hi ~ Could anyone tell me if you cut the strips horizontally or vertically from a t-shirt? Do you know how many strips there may be from one t-shirt? Also, do you know about how long the strip should be for these cute headbands? Thinking about making these for my son’s class. Thanks! 😀

Tracy – You cut the strips horizontal to the hem of the t-shirt. Depending on the size of the shirt, you should be able to get about 12-18 strips cut from the body (stopping at the armholes). Once you cut them, they will be continuous loops so you just need to just them open on one end. You will need 3 strips to braid for each headband.
T-shirts that do not have side seams (they do exist!) work the very best because you won’t have the bulk of the side seam in your headband, but any larger sized t-shirt will work!

Thanks so much for the info & the clever idea. We ended up using a jersey sheet, tie dyed it, & cut it into strips. They’re going to look awesome for their 60’s themed poetry evening w/their tie dyed tees & hippie headbands. Thank you!! 😀
