Making Stuff: Shorten that Skirt {refashion}

by This is Carrie on September 1, 2011

At the thrift store I tend to gravitate towards old, handmade-looking pieces.  The eyelet panel and lace details on this skirt called to me but it’s awkward length did not flatter.

With all the hem details, shortening from the bottom was not an option.  Shortening at the waist ended up being a super simple process that I need to remember more often.

STEPS

1. Mark & cut desired length skirt, measuring from hem up.

2. Cut off elastic waistband leaving 1/2″ seam allowance.

3. Use a gathering stitch around top of skirt to ease in some of the extra fullness.

4. Sew waistband back onto skirt, stretching as you sew to ease in the rest of the fullness.
