Last week was art lesson number two for all the second graders at the elementary school. I reintroduced the art element of “color” by reading My Many Color Days by Dr. Seuss.
I introduced primary colors and secondary colors with a few glasses of water and red, yellow & blue food coloring. They practiced blending their own colors using soft pastels.
We talked about Wassily Kandinsky and his love of color.
We talked about how color can make you feel different things and how artists use color to express their own feelings. They especially thought it was funny when I asked how they would feel about Darth Vader if his costume was pink instead of black.
Then they made their own beautiful interpretations of Kandinsky’s Dots using the following ideas for inspiration: primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors, cool colors, “colors I like”, colors from Star Wars, colors of my bedroom, “how i’m feeling colors”, etc.

I love that you go into the classroom and do this with them 🙂
my many colored days is one of my favorite books. i’ve been reading it to my son since he was a newborn. he is almost 2, and absolutely loves it too. <3
What great lessons! I have never heard of that Dr. Seuss book, and I thought I knew them all. Huh.
You’re doing an amazing job with the children. Art is so important in our lives. It is such an essential way of expression for everyone, most of all children. Keep up the good work.
Very cool lesson! I especially like the question about Darth Vader wearing pink.
