I hadn’t been to a marathon just to watch since I happened upon the NYC marathon finish over eight years ago. This weekend, a couple friends and I parked ourselves at mile 3 of the LA marathon to cheer on our Team Sparkle running skirt girls.
Honestly, I can’t think of something more motivating and inspiring than watching a marathon.
From the elite racers,
Who finished the marathon before the majority of the racers were even half done.
To those who overcame life’s obstacles to achieve their goal.
To those that needed someone else’s eyes…
or someone else’s legs
To help them get to the finish line.
The crowd of marathoners who set the goal, spent months training, and made it to the finish line, is so diverse, it’s hard not to picture yourself out there no matter who you are.
I highly suggest you find a marathon near you, pack up the family, make some signs, park yourself on the race route (I think the best is mile 23 where the racers can use your encouragement the most) and be anonymous cheerleaders for a couple hours. I promise it will definitely make it on the list of “coolest things our family has done together.”
P.S. Here is my running friend, Alma, rockin’ the purple Team Sparkle running skirt. She finished the marathon in an impressive 3:45.

We have never regretted a marathon attendance
A good friend of mine ran in the LA marathon. Very cool.
I used to love watching it in NYC. Haven’t seen one since though.
