My Girl with Glasses

by This is Carrie on October 5, 2010

First of all, I have thank you to everyone who took the time to send us your “girls with glasses” photos.  From blog comments, to the sweetest full blog posts, from Twitter responses to direct e-mails, the response was seriously overwhelming.  We got hundreds and hundreds of photos capturing the bespectacled faces of girls young and old, girls who are librarians, girls who are burlesque dancers, girls with brown hair, red hair, purple hair and pink hair, girls who love cats, girls who love roller derby, girls who have always loved their glasses, girls who have grown to love their glasses and girls who wished they needed to wear glasses.  A tiny few of you, we know personally, but the huge majority are perfect strangers who took a moment of your day to reach out to a little girl who wasn’t so sure about joining the “girls with glasses” club.  As her mother, I have been truly touched by your kindness and caring.  It’s been a wonderful experience to share it all with Pumpkin who’s still trying to wrap her 5 year old brain around why everyone would do this for her.  Thank you.

So without further adieu, here is my girl with glasses (and personally, I think she totally rocks them).  Thanks to all of you, she definitely knows she’s not alone.

Her frame of choice: A deep pink (bordering on red) with flowers on the side.

Mom’s frame of choice: Tortoise Shell (but since we started calling them the “cheetah glasses” she loves them even more).

Thanks again for sharing your “glasses pride” with us over these last two weeks. I do believe it made all the difference.  Being a girl with glasses was a little scary for Pumpkin at first, but I can already tell she’s gaining her own sense of “glasses pride” as  each day passes by.

Mariah October 5, 2010 at 7:30 am

Ah I love them!!! I will have to show my daughter.

whoorl October 5, 2010 at 7:46 am

Oh, I adore both of them! Pumpkin looks so fantastic!

(Um, do they make those in adult sizes??? Just wondering…)

Mauri October 5, 2010 at 7:55 am

Love the frame choices! Glasses are so much cuter these days. When I was a kid there weren’t too many choices. I ended up with these ugly light pink glasses that my Mom picked out because she said they looked good with my skin tone. Blah, I hated pink! I think I would have been much happier with a fun funky pair like Pumpkin. She is a real cutie in her glasses.

This is a girl who is going to grow up rocking a wonderful personal style. Go Pumpkin!

As a 27 year old, who only 3 months ago started wearing glasses (though probably needing them for several years already) I know how strange it can be to start seeing your face with such a prominent accessory plonked right in the middle. But it seems you put a lot of us to shame with your bold and perfect choice and I hope you have fun collecting as many pairs of spectacles as Imelda Marcos collects shoes. 🙂

Well, of course “Gwamma Kathi” thinks that she would look beautiful with or without glasses, but I must say that those two pairs are particularly stunning!

I remember once she didn’t want to take off her new purple sunglasses for anything. She should just think of her new glasses as fabulous sunglasses with clear lenses . . . the must-have fashion accessory!

I didn’t remember that until you mentioned it!

What a little darling! And yes — she rocks those frames with pride! From one myopic gal to another, you picked the best glasses ever! 😎

She looks adorable in both pairs. My little sister wore glasses young too, but i think she was a bit older. This was back in the 80’s when big glasses were in style. They weren’t cute like your daughter’s.

I started wearing glasses back in the early 80’s and boy did I have some crazy ugly frames. The ones they have now are so cute.

Adorable! Great choices! I’m sure you already know about the Girls with Glasses Show at http://thegirlswithglasses.com/ but thought I’d mention it just in case you don’t. Their theme song is so cute!

Their theme song video was the first thing I showed Pumpking when we got home from the eye dr. Summer and Brooke are adorable.

I’m a mom of 2 little girls with another little girl on the way. I love all cute stuff you make. Your little girl is absolutely adorable in her glasses (i’m sure she is just as adorable without.). She looks very sofisticated and classy in them. I have to say the pink are my fav but the cheetahs are cute too. I wore glasses for a long time before I went to contacts. She looks way cuter in glasses than I ever did. She is definately rockin’ them!

she is rockin the glasses! I wore glasses when I was young…I didn’t rock them as well. LOL. fun2bkids.blogspot.com

She looks so cute. Great choice of glasses!

Eleni October 5, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Love them both. She looks GREAT!

Sara October 5, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I am loving both pairs – she looks perfect in them – honestly, they complete her whole look 🙂

The glasses are beautiful on her. And I LOVE her hair. I dont know if you have ever seen the Nicky Lad Blythe doll but I think they really resemble each other. The doll even wears pink glasses.

Super cute… love the pink/red glasses… I started wearing glasses at 4yrs. I thought I was pretty special! And now I am just glad to see clearly!

kari October 5, 2010 at 7:53 pm

first, she’s totally c.u.t.e. in those glasses! and second, i love the crocheted doilies on the shirts!

jonita mortensen October 5, 2010 at 8:37 pm

You’re beautiful, my pumpkin. Your glasses add a whole new dimension (ask Mom what that word means) to your already sparkling personality.

Oh! She totally rocks the glasses!! Such a cutie!

Brittany October 6, 2010 at 1:51 pm

She looks very grown up and adorable! When I was a kid I wanted glasses. I didn’t get them until I was 16, but then they got in the way of my pirouettes, so it wasn’t as fun as I had hoped. I’ve been totally ignoring my feed reader for the past … uh… 6(?) months. I just caught up on your blog and it was a fun way to spend time when I should really be cleaning my house. Congrats on the pregnancy. #3 is coming for me, but not until Feb. I think we were pregnant at the same time last time, too! Thanks for all the inspiration!

KP October 6, 2010 at 9:30 pm

LOVE them and LOVE you~

Christy October 7, 2010 at 6:55 am

Oh my gosh she is ADORABLE! I love the glasses, I love her haircut, her hair color, and her beautiful little face. What a doll! She totally rocks the glasses. They just add personality to every outfit.

Chrissy October 7, 2010 at 8:42 am

She looks fantastic!

I’ll just echo the sentiments above that my first few pairs were nowhere near as stylish. We’ve come a long way in kids glasses!

scout loves them! her exact word was “cool!”

Jen October 8, 2010 at 11:59 am

Super awesome glasses, and she looks great! I only wish that frames had been as stylish back when I was her age, but am so glad that no one else has to suffer with ugly frames!

Tracey October 8, 2010 at 1:14 pm

I absolutely love her in glasses. She suits them! Makes her look even sassier! xx

Nancy October 8, 2010 at 2:13 pm

1. You are an awesome mom
2. All the girls with glasses who responded are awesome
3. Your daughter is adorable in her new glasses
4. I’m wondering if the hair stylists would laugh at me if I brought in a picture of your daughter and asked for her haircut. Super cute!
