Crochet Baby Turban Pattern & Tutorial
This quick and easy crocheted hat makes a great handmade baby shower gift.
The hardest part might be choosing the color.
A faux rib pattern gives the little turban added interest.
Have fun! I dare you to make just one.

Crochet Baby Turban Pattern – size 0-3 months
Supplies:
Martha Stewart Extra Soft Wool Blend or similar worsted-weight baby yarn (you can get two hats from one skein).
US G6/4.00mm crochet hook
Yarn Needle
Stitches: ch- chain, dc-double crochet, hdc-half double crochet, sl st- slip stitch
The first 5 rounds are crocheted in the round and joined with a slip stitch in the starting chain. What you might consider the “wrong side” of the top of the hat becomes the “right side”Β once the rib stitch begins at row 6.Β From round 6 on, at the end of each round, join with a slip stitch before turning to begin the next round (this means you will alternate working from the front and the back of the hat).
Repeat pattern inside the asterisks. Total stitch count for each round is in parentheses. Chain does not count toward final stitch count.
Gauge: Rounds 1-4 = 2 3/4″ height
Start with a Magic ring (http://www.crochetme. com/forums/t/28917.aspx)
- Row 1- ch 3, dc 11 inside magic ring; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch.
- Row 2- ch 3, *2 dc in each dc* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. (22 dc)
- Row 3- ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in next dc* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. (33 dc)
- Row 4- ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. (44 dc)
- Row 5- ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch (55 dc)
- Row 6- ch 3, dc in every stitch around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Turn. (55 dc)
- Row 7- ch 2, hdc in every dc around in back loop only; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Turn. (55 hdc)
- Row 8- ch 3, dc in each hdc front loop only; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Turn. (55 dc)
- Repeat rows 7 and 8 three more times (creating 4 “ribs” of stitches). You will complete 14 rounds in all.
Finish off. Weave in ends.
Thread yarn through yarn needle. Using a double thickness, wrap yarn from top of first rib to the edge of the hat and pull tight. Wind it about 7 times to make the turban “knot”. Secure yarn and hide end under the knot.

I love this tiny little perfect turban that you have created. I just started to crochet this last year when our first grandchild was born. Olivia is almost one and I was just wondering if there is a way to make the pattern bigger to fit a one year old? My daughter is on love with your turban and wants me to make a few for her little Olivia……
Any suggestions how I can make the pattern bigger?
Thanks for sharing

Hey Theresa!
Yes, of course you can make this bigger. If it were me, I’d add more rows between rows 5 and 6.
The new row 6 would be – ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in next 4 stitches* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch
The new row 7 would be – ch 3, *2 dc in first dc. 1 dc in next 5 stitches* around; join with a sl st in top of beginning ch (55 dc)
Can you see the pattern of making the hat bigger? Keep adding these types of rows until the crown is big enough. Maybe 2-3 rows? Then go back to Row 6 to finish off.
I’d also add another repeat of rows 7 and 8 at the end to make the hat deeper.

My 20 year old daughter found your turbans and wanted me to make her one. My first one was a little big but mom is going to wear it, and it is perfect as it is a raspberry pink color. I just got done making her another one in a cream color and it was perfect. I may have to make some more as gifts. Thank you for sharing.

This is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! How would I go about making it for a 4 y/o girl? Bigger hook?

Howdy! Love love love this hat. Pattern question… so i’m crocheting around for the first 5 rows. At the end of the 5th row, I just with a slip stitch as I have for the prior rows. Do I then stop crocheting around? Do I turn and go back the way I came for the rest of the hat? Thank you!

It’s at the end of the 6th row that you will start turning instead of crocheting around.

Hi! Love your turban pattern!! I found it on Pinterest. I made one today, and it hardly took any time. I have a question, though. Where I do the slip stitch to join the rows, it leaves a “gap” and I can’t figure out why. There are the correct number of stitches in each row, I counted and counted again to make sure. It just looks weird where each row is joined, and very noticeable when the hat is finished; it’s not smooth like yours. Do you happen to know what the problem might be? If you have an email, I could send you a picture so you could better see what I mean. There are several babies I’d love to make this hat for, and I want it to be just right.

I’ve found that if you slip stitch to the top of the very first DC instead of to the top chain that closes the gap. Basically just ignore the chains and use them to create height. Good luck!

Hey Holly, I just made another little turban last night to see if I could figure out the problem. I definitely slip stitch into the top of the chain without getting a gap. Let;s keep emailing to see if we can figure out the problem.

I made another turban today, and no more gaps! I skipped the chain and just slip stitched in the first DC/HBC. I don’t know if that is the perfect way, but it works π

I used to have that problem. Could it be that you were crocheting around the chain instead if through the top link? That used to cause the gap issue for me. It’s much trickier to get through the link (remember two on top if hook, one under), but it looks much nicer.
This is so cute, and your photography skills are wonderful as well.
If this is not on Ravelry yet, it should be!!
Lovely work!! π

The best part of this whole tutorial is the picture of that sweet little angel baby wearing the turban. She is just precious! Am I the only one who wants to reach through the computer to kiss her sweet cheekies?

Can I purchase the hat??

Oh goodness, that baby is adorable! I’m definitely going to make one (or more!). Thank you so much for sharing this pattern!

Question: when you say to crochet through the front or back loop, do you mean the original front/back or the new one (since it changes at row 7)? In other words, I’m ending up with the hdc as the outside of the rib, and the dc as the inner part. Is that right or did I flub up somewhere?

Hmm, on closer look at the pictures, I think I did put the hdc in the wrong part, can anyone confirm before i pull out the whole row?

I LOVE this pattern! For some reason, mine turned out rather large. It looks like it could fit a toddler. Could it be the yarn I used? I used Red Heart Super Saver to try the first one. Also, thank you for making this a free pattern. It’s absolutely adorable!

Thank you for a beautiful pattern. The little one looks absolutely precious in the hat. I live in a community that offers independent living and assisted living apartments. We have a benevolent care fund to raise money. This fund is used when a resident runs out of money (due to illness etc.) and can no longer afford to stay in their apartments. No one has ever been asked to leave their apartment because their funds dried up. We have a room with all hand made items (mainly baby items) that are sold to raise money for this fund. I would like permission to be able to make a couple of hats and sell them for our Benevolent Care Fund. Thank You, Ellen
