Tutorial: T-shirt to Newborn Gown

by This is Carrie on August 11, 2008

Here you go!  Let me know if you have any questions or need any clarifications.

Newborn Gown Pattern (pdf)

You will probably have to choose “shrink to printable area” to get it the right size. It’s the right size if the top is 5″ wide and the sleeve is 7 1/2″ across “join” line.   Lately, I have been lengthening the pattern by 14″ instead of the 12 1/2″ as stated on the bodice patterns.

You are so awesome-I am really really excited to try this out!! I must go to Saver’s today!! 🙂 Thanks!

Alissa August 11, 2008 at 6:26 pm

This is great – thank you so much! I’ll be sure and post pictures once I’ve made one! I’m now regretting making my husband donate all of his wacky t-shirts. 🙁

kadee August 11, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Wonderful! Thanks so much.

Chelsey August 12, 2008 at 1:34 am

So glad you did this. Now I will never lose the pattern again!

Kathi D August 12, 2008 at 3:35 am

Terrific! Unfortunately, you are too late. I’m never making another onesie. (Until your next one.)

I’d better start saving my best t-shirts. You know, I owned those oldies when they were new.

Rachel H August 12, 2008 at 5:15 pm

I once worked with a girl who said her father used to tell her while she was in college, “Honey – never forget- C’s get degrees!” hilarious.

TftCarrie August 12, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Kathi – just so you know, baby brother practically lives in all the onesies you made. Now he’s starting to grow out of the bigger ones so I found some new patches (and I am pulling the johnny cash ones off the old ones because they are my favorite) and affixing them all to new, bigger onesies. You definitely set the tone for the little guys style.

Rachel H – That was exactly my motto in college. Luckily in fashion design, no one ever asks about your GPA. THey barely ask about your degree.

This is fabulous! Thanks for sharing, i hope to steal some of hubby’s tee’s to make a few.

Jill August 14, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Thank you so much for the tutorial – I’ve been wanting to make one of these since I first saw them on your blog.

stitch.tac.sew August 19, 2008 at 8:09 pm

I have been searching for ideas to use my old tshirts on! I cannot wait to make these!

Wendy August 19, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Love it! Too bad I used up all our coolest t-shirts making a rock n roll quilt for our oldest daughter.

Also, I just have to say that I love the little quilted rainbow on your header. I totally have all those fabrics from when we were little.

kirsten August 19, 2008 at 9:59 pm

prisspot August 20, 2008 at 4:02 pm

What a GREAT idea… I love this! So cute… and a nice change than the pastel colors that most babies wear!

NotABlogger August 21, 2008 at 8:12 am

Wonderful! I couldn’t wait and put one of these cutie outfits together last night. Now the search for old t-shirts begins…

Here’s my report and result.

Crazymamaof6 September 6, 2008 at 3:21 am

neverfails September 10, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Oh this is so perfect! We have a bunch of old t-shirts we were about to get rid of to make room for baby, but now we can reuse them. Would you mind if I posted a link here from my blog and used one of your pictures?

How am I supposed to print this on regular 8.5×11 paper when the pdf file is so much bigger than that? Help?

TftCarrie September 14, 2008 at 4:38 am

When I open the pdf pattern, there is one piece per page (4 pages) and they print out the perfect size.
Is anyone else having the same problem as Jennifer?

Taryn September 23, 2008 at 6:28 pm

I just stumbled across this tutorial and I’m thrilled. Thank you so much for posting it. I can’t wait to try this out.

Dainty Deity September 27, 2008 at 7:26 am

Hey there – this mama makes stuff too – don’t feel too bad – I also didn’t do well in pattern classes All that yellowed cardstock just looked so – drab!

I did better with draping 🙂

You have some great ideas – thanks for sharing!

I love this! Can’t wait to try it out. Mind if I post a link to this entry on my lj?

Go right ahead! Send me the link when you finish!

Linz November 18, 2008 at 2:47 am

I’m having the same trouble as Jennifer. The pattern is printing too large for an 8.5″ x 11″. Am I doing something wrong? This is such a cute project, I really want to give it a try! Thanks.

TftCarrie November 18, 2008 at 2:52 am

Linz,

I am not sure what is happening. It must be some sort of setting somewhere because the files are saved as 8 1/2″ x 11″ pdfs. The only thing I can think of is to open it up in some sort of program like photoshop and resize the file. Or, I know some printing windows have an option to “scale to fit.” This might work as well.

Sorry you’re having problems!

Jennifer November 18, 2008 at 3:19 am

I used the “shrink to fit paper size” inside the printer settings for Adobe PDF. It worked beautifully.

Linz November 18, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Thanks for the help. I downloaded the file and then could resize it for printing in Adobe. Thanks again, I can’t wait to try it out.

This is ADORABLE! I have a few baby showers coming up and will definitely have to try this out.

Julie April 28, 2009 at 5:14 am

I’ve always wondered how they made those necklines on onesies. Who knew it could be so easy. You’re really creative. I’m not very good with the sewing machine but I will try this. Thank you.

Ginger April 29, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Can’t wait to try this,What a awesome shower gift .
thank you so much for sharing it with us !
hugs

KatyBelle April 30, 2009 at 1:16 am

Sweet! My best friend (who’s husband is in a punk band) is “with child,” and this would be a killer shower gift for them!

Gladreal May 2, 2009 at 2:31 pm

I didn’t use your pattern, but just had to let you know how glad I am you posted instructions. I made a bunch of tshirts into gowns and diapers for my baby girl (yikes, 2 years ago!), and everyone who saw them, from the ladies at the hospital onward, just loved loved loved the idea!
Mad totally rocks in her recycled clothes, now peasant tops, dresses, leggings and shoes……….

simplythis May 28, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Excellent tutorial!! I just finished my first one. I’m half asleep, the picture is blurry, but I’m amazed it turned out as well as it did considering I should know never to sew at bedtime. Thank you so much for sharing this! http://simplythis.wordpress.com/2009/05/28/t-shirt-to-baby-gown/

Shellie June 1, 2009 at 8:38 pm

This is awesome. I think I’m going to try it and use the pattern to just shrink a shirt down to a 9-12m size instead of a gown.

darbishar June 15, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Thank you so much! I am due with my second in Aug. and when I saw these I knew I had to make one. I used one of my husbands old football shirts and it turned out super cute! I can't wait to make a few more. Once again Thank You!

Cherie June 25, 2009 at 8:29 am

I feel like the answer to this should be really obvious – but when the pattern says 1/4" allowance and 1/2" hem… does this mean that I should ADD that to the pattern outline, or that it's already included? Thanks for clearing this up!

This is Carrie June 25, 2009 at 2:22 pm

CHerie – THat is what is included in the pattern. If you want to do something different, you need to add it to the pattern.

thanks!
Carrie

Love it. Love the creativity. Also love others who refashion, recreate, reuse and recycle. I can't wait to try this. Will add pics when I'm done. My hubby has a bizillion tees- he would never notice if some went missing.
